Learn about Freezers and Air Conditioning

In modern times, people often take for granted technology such as freezers and air conditioning until they break. It is only then that people realize what a huge role cooling units play in their lives.

Though they are both used for cooling, freezers and air conditioning units differ in several ways. The first is that freezers are used to preserve physical objects usually food, which rots much slower, or not at all, in cold environments, while air conditioning units by definition change the condition of the air, which can mean cooling or dehumidifying it. From technical specifications point of view, the way freezing and air conditioning is accomplished is also different.

Freezers gained popularity in the late 1920’s, when they replaced the ice box, which was a box with a special compartment where large blocks of ice were kept and replaced, keeping any food placed inside cool. Advances in technical specifications, such as the discovery of Freon gas, led to the invention of the modern freezer. In this, super cold gasses, such as Freon, are circulated in coils around food, keeping the insulated box cold.

Though they both cool, this is different from how air conditioning units chill the air. Technical specifications on an air conditioning unit are built around the principle of sweating to stay cool in humans. As air is pumped through coils, cool surfaces are exposed on which water condenses. This collected water is then evaporated out the top of the air conditioning unit, taking heat with it. The cooled air is then re-circulated through the car or house.
